Newborn Essentials Checklist: Must-Have Items for New Parents

Welcoming a newborn into the family is an exciting journey, but being prepared with the right essentials can make it smoother for new parents. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the must-have items across various categories to ensure you have everything you need for your baby’s arrival

1. Sleeping Essentials
Most newborns spend their time sleeping and on this list, I am going to write for you sleeping essentials for a newborn to make him/her comfortable:

1. Crib or Bassinet:
On this, you are going to make an informed decision on whether to choose a crib or a bassinet for your newborn baby. However many parents prefer to put their baby to sleep on a bassinet before they transfer him/her to a crib.
If you are tight on a budget you can just buy a crib because it accommodates the baby for a longer time but if your pocket is friendly consider buying a bassinet and when the baby gets older you can now consider buying a crib. This ensures that your baby is safe and has a designated sleeping space.
Also when you put your baby to sleep ensure you follow safety guidelines and standards this will ensure your baby is not chocked from a bad sleeping position or suffocated by excess items in baby’s sleeping space

2. Fitted Sheets:

Fitted baby sheet

For the sheets that you will use on your baby’s bassinet or crib ensure that you choose soft,  breathable materials.  This will ensure your baby is comfortable.  You should also ensure that you have at least two or three fitted sheets handy for easy changes

3. Sleepsuits and Swaddles:
Sleepsuits are good for your baby as they help keep the baby warm and cosy while sleeping.  This will help the baby to sleep for a longer period and also prevent him from contracting diseases such as colds and pneumonia.
You can also consider swaddling your baby as swaddling can provide comfort however ensure that the swaddling is done safely

4. White Noise Machine:
A white noise machine is another great sleeping essential that you should consider buying.  This is because it creates a soothing environment for better sleep. It also mimics background noise that babies might find calming.
I tried using a white noise machine on my baby and I loved the results. He used to fall asleep faster compared to when I did not use a white noise machine

These essentials ensure your newborn sleeps comfortably and safely.

2. Feeding Essentials
Here we will see the essential items that the baby will need when feeding.  As we know feeding is key for a baby’s growth and it is good to choose the correct feeding essentials to aid in this activity.

1. Bottles and Nipples:
   – Choose appropriate bottles and nipples suitable for your baby’s age. It is always written the baby’s age on the package therefore it is good to take the correct bottle
A one-month-old baby uses a bottle with a small hole in the nipple and the size of the hole of nipple continues to increase based on age.
If you use a one-month nipple on a 5-month baby he or she may be tired when sucking because the milk flow is less and if you use a 5-month-old nipple on a one-month-old baby he or she may even chock because the flow of milk is high then his or her age.
You should have at least 4-6 bottles to cover a day’s feeding. This will also help in keeping the bottles clean, sterilized and dry.

2. Breast Pump:
A breast pump is a helpful tool as it helps breastfeeding mums who may need to express milk. There are two main reasons why you may need to express milk

* If you are not going to breastfeed your baby directly on the boob you may need a breast pump to express milk for storage

*If you want to have a continuous flow of milk and a lot of it then expressing using a pump is the way to go as the hormones responsible for producing milk known as oxytocin sense that milk is needed in large amounts it will continue to produce more.
For this reason, you should consider buying a breast pump
There are two types of pumps in the market. One which is manual which needs more effort when pumping as you do the pumping by yourself and one which is electric.  For an electric pump, no effort is needed as it does the expressing for you.

3. Nursing Pillow:
A nursing pillow comes in handy as it provides comfort during breastfeeding or bottle feeding. It also helps to position the baby for a better latch.  However, from my experience, the nursing pillow is helpful in the first two months because the baby is too small.  From three months I found latching the baby without the nursing pillow was more comfortable.
Give it a try and comment in the comment section about your experience with a nursing pillow.

4. Burp Cloths:
Burb cloths are another essential item for a newborn as it is used for managing spit-ups and burping after feeding.
As a new mum burping your baby after feeding is a must as it helps remove excess gas from the baby’s stomach. Newborns always have a lot of gas and if you do not burp them it may add to their discomfort
You should keep several purp cloths on hand for quick clean-ups

5. Formula (if not breastfeeding):
For several reasons a mother to a newborn needs Formula.  Some of these reasons are
   – You may not have enough milk that meet your baby’s demand and supplementing it with formula becomes essential
-For medical reasons, it may force you not to breastfeed your child and formula will be essential for your newborn

6. Bottle Brush:
A bottle brush is another essential item as it helps to clean bottles thoroughly, reaching all corners and crevices. This ensures that the bottle is clean and will not contaminate the baby’s milk with germs.

7. Sterilizer:
A steriliser is another important item.  Whether electric or microwave, a sterilizer ensures bottles and nipples are germ-free.

8. Bottle Warmer:
Have you ever known that milk from the breast is always warm and not cold or hot? A bottle warmer helps warm chilled breast milk or formula to a comfortable temperature for the baby.
However, it is important to feel the temperature using the back of your hand to avoid giving your baby hot milk.

9. Drying Rack:
For me, a drying rack is a must-have for parents of a newborn. It is a designated place to air-dry bottles and accessories after washing. This will help the bottles to remain clean dry and not contaminated

3. Clothing Essentials
On the clothing essentials you should consider buying clothes from three months up as babies grow faster.  For this, I am saying out of experience because I bought too many small clothes which my firstborn baby ended up not wearing. I have prepared a consolidated list of all clothing essentials for a newborn:

1. Onesies:
A onesie is an Easy one-piece outfit perfect for daily wear. This is because you do not have to incorporate more clothes for your baby to be comfortable.
For me, I always prefer this mostly when we are indoors. You should consider having at least 7 but buy sizes from 3 months up

2. Socks and Mittens:
The socks help to keep the tiny feet warm and mittens help to keep the arms warm and also help to prevent scratching.
For this consider buying at Least 10 pairs each.

3. Hats:
Hats come in handy as they help to protect your newborn’s delicate head from cold and bad elements.  You should therefore consider buying at least 7 hats for your baby. However, do not let your baby sleep with a hat on as it may bring about an ear infection

4. Blankets:
For this one, you can buy shawls and swaddle blankets for comfort and warmth. You can also buy receiving blankets for various uses.
Consider buying at least 5 blankets for easy change-ups and maintaining cleanliness.

5. Sleepsuits:
This is a comfortable one-piece outfit designed for sleep. Babies mostly do not cover themselves at night even if you cover them with a blanket he or she may uncover herself therefore sleep suits are a good essential item that will help keep your newborn baby warm while sleeping.
You should consider buying at least 7 sleepsuits for easy change-ups.

6. Jackets or Sweaters:
Depending on the weather where you stay, having a few warm layers is essential. It is therefore essential to consider buying at least 7 pairs of sweaters and 7 pairs of jackets however in this case consider buying big sizes.

7. Burp Cloths:
As I had said earlier burping your baby is a must and having burp clothes is a must-have as it helps you not to get dirty when burping your baby after feeding.

8. Baby Gowns:
You should also consider buying baby gowns as they are convenient for quick and easy diaper changes, especially during the night. This is because you don’t have to remove your baby’s clothes for you to change them.

9. Swimwear (if applicable):
If you plan to introduce your baby to water activities you can consider buying swimwear.  However, physicians recommend waiting until your baby is at least 6 months old for you to introduce him or her to water activities including swimming.

Having these clothing essentials on hand will ensure your newborn is well-dressed and comfortable in various situations and seasons.

4. Health And Safety Essentials
Your baby’s health comes first and having essential items is very crucial. In this list I have covered all health and safety essentials for your newborn:
